Location: Above the Umpqua River, at the entrance to Winchester BayĬape Arago Lighthouse: The Latest Lookout After dark, watch for the unique red-and-white flashes emanating from this steadfast lighthouse. And, no, you aren't seeing double: this lighthouse bears a striking resemblance to its sister structure at Heceta Head. The 65-foot tower looms 100 feet above a serene stretch of sand dunes. This stucco and brick column is actually the predecessor of the Oregon coast's very first lighthouse, which tumbled inauspiciously into the Umpqua River in 1861 following a particularly fierce storm. Umpqua River Lighthouse: The Second-Chance Beacon Open daily during high season tours available by appointment year-round. Heceta Head also offers bed and breakfast accommodations in the assistant light keepers house. Historic restorations were completed this year, and the lighthouse's 1000-watt quartz bulb – said to be the brightest on the coast – is once again visible up to 21 miles offshore. Poised at the edge of the 1,000-foot high Heceta Head, a popular spot for nesting seabirds, its 56-foot tower looms 205 feet above the ocean. This stuccoed brick bastion towers high above a stunningly scenic viewpoint. Heceta Head Lighthouse: The Watchtower Restored Location: Yaquina Bay State Recreation SiteĬurrent status: Deactivated in 1874 Restored in 1996 as a privately maintained navigational aid Open daily except for holidays hours reduced October through May. Its 161-foot high beacon still beckons seagoing ships, thanks to the patronage of ta band of local lighthouse lovers. Today it's the second-oldest standing lighthouse on the Oregon coast, and purported to be the oldest standing structure in Newport. It guided seafarers for a mere three years before it was upstaged by nearby Yaquina Head Lighthouse, but this 42-foot-high wooden structure has certainly withstood the test of time as well as the notorious ravages of the coastal elements. Yaquina Bay Lighthouse: The Time Tested Tower Location: Three miles north of the entrance to Yaquina Bay Open 11-4pm closed Wednesdays in high season hours reduced October through May. Located within the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, this lighthouse is surrounded by a seascape so scenic and classically coastal, you'll wonder if you've stepped into an Edward Hopper painting. It's the tallest lighthouse on the Oregon coast, and known for its unique flashing beacon pattern. This conical brick bastion, looming 162 feet above the ocean on a narrow spit of land jutting due west, boasts a 93-foot tower accessible by 114 steps straight up. Yaquina Head Lighthouse: The Commanding Column Location: 10 miles west of Tillamook, at the southern entrance to Tillamook Bay Open daily April through October, 11-4pm. You might catch a glimpse of whales, seabirds, Steller sea lions, or something even more fantastical: rumor has it a ghost is also hanging about the grounds. This lighthouse is accessible along a scenic trail with panoramic views of marine life. The original lighthouse lens, which guided many a mariner to safe harbor in days of old, remains in place. The humblest among Oregon's lighthouses, this brick and iron octagon rises just 38 feet from its perch 217 feet above the ocean. Location: 1.2 miles off Tillamook Head, just south of SeasideĬape Meares Lighthouse: The Humble Beacon She's also visible from Cannon Beach and Seaside proper. No surprise, then, that she's known in these parts as "Terrible Tilly." Today, Tilly is privately owned, but visitors can catch prime views along the Oregon Coast Trail or at Ecola State Park's main viewpoint. Buffeting waves can hurtle stones as high as the 133-foot-high lighthouse lantern, and at least one surveyor died while attempting to land at the lighthouse. This iron, brick and basalt beauty was erected atop a rocky islet to guide ships piloting toward the treacherous entrance to the Columbia River. Here's our tour of Oregon Coast lighthouses from north to south: Situated on rocky outposts, lighthouses double as excellent wildlife viewing areas and outstanding lookouts for storm watching and migrating whales. Most of Oregon's lighthouses are in close proximity to state parks and provide year-round recreational activities. They are among the most scenic and most photographed monuments on Oregon's coast, and seven of the lighthouses remain open to visitors, welcoming more than two-and-a-half million tourists each year. These watchtowers remain as much a part of Oregon's rugged coastal landscapes as any landform or off shore monolith. Oregon's coastal lighthouses are visible links to the past, existing somewhere between land, sea and sky, these towering sentinels showcase the Northwest's nautical legacy from an entirely novel perspective.

With just ten days to explore Chile on foot, I hiked the sun-baked northern deserts of the Atacama and the green and mythical Pacific island of Chiloé. Chile, an astonishing 2,653 miles long, is ribbon of a country where you can travel from the arid deserts in the north all the way to the glaciers of Patagonia in the southern tip, fitting vineyards, salt flats and surf beaches in between if you are so inclined. “The humor, spice, charm, insight, and compassion with which Gary Paul Nabhan weaves his tale make for enjoyable reading. This is a tale of two climates. Anyone ignorant of the desert should begin their cure here.”- Tucson Citizen Here the reader is lured into botany, ethnology, hydrology, and a couple of million acres by vivid writing, good pictures, and a beautifully produced book. “People often find science boring and ill written. “His eyes are those of a scientist, his prose and vision a poet’s: spare, evocative, respectful of both facts and mysteries.”- Orion Nature Quarterly “The Desert Smells Like Rain offers a remarkable insight, sensitive but unsentimental, combining the sound perceptions of a scientist with ecological concerns, matching humor and a sense of human frailty with tentative hope for the future.”- High Country News A remarkably humane essay on nature and respect for it.”- Bloomsbury Review “Nabhan’s point is that we transplanted desert dwellers have a great deal to learn from longtime, environmentally conscious inhabitants if we are not to destroy our fragile home. Whether visiting a sacred cave in the Baboquivari Mountains or attending a saguaro wine-drinking ceremony, Nabhan conveys the everyday life and extraordinary perseverance of these desert people in a book that has become a contemporary classic of environmental literature. Woven through his account are coyote tales, O'odham children's impressions of the desert, and observations on the political problems that come with living on both sides of an international border. Bringing O'odham voices to the page at every turn, he writes elegantly of how they husband scant water supplies, grow crops, and utilize wild edible foods. Ethnobotanist Gary Nabhan has lived with the Tohono O'odham, long known as the Papagos, observing the delicate balance between these people and their environment. Longtime residents of the Sonoran Desert, the Tohono O'odham people have spent centuries living off the land-a land that most modern citizens of southern Arizona consider totally inhospitable. He shares his awe and gratitude for O’odham writers and storytellers who have been generous enough to share stories with those of us from other cultural traditions so that we may also respect and appreciate the smell of the desert after a rain. He writes about his own heritage and connections to the desert, climate change, and the border. This edition includes a new preface written by the author, in which he reflects on his gratitude for the O’odham people who shared their knowledge with him. In terms of quality narrative games, Layers of Fear was art. It blurred the lines between motivation and consequence, making “good” or “bad” a matter of our own opinion. It’s still a gorgeous game that maturely and intensely deals with loss, loneliness, and insanity. It didn’t ruin Layers of Fear by any stretch. It relied a bit too much on things popping out and going “boo!” The monster also felt a bit pointless, adding some tension and scares at the cost of the overall tone and logic. Go across them - one will fall halfway for a moment, then the rest of the way - and once you're back on the office floor, you can touch the phone one last time and finally get the Magnum Opus piece. When I first reviewed Layers of Fear back in February, I concluded that it was a beautifully realized vision of tragedy brought down only by a few adherence to convention. When you do, you'll find yourself stepping through chain-suspended pallets that you need to cross all the way to the last phone. A baby doll will fall from it and cry, but this will give you the last 3 numbers needed to put into the phone. Look directly across from it and you'll see a cabinet open its doors. Then, walk back out and along the shelves until you reach a large painting on the right. Push it over, and go to the left to find a door and another phone. After that, you'll find yourself behind that very shelf. Touch the phone to listen to the dialogue.Īfter that, turn around and watch a bookcase fall directly across from the alcove where you are, and look at the back after it falls to see the numbers you need to enter into the phone. You'll come across an alcove on the left that has another phone ringing. When you go through the secret passageway and find yourself up above everything, walk forward and then to the left along the top shelves. If anyone remembers a level of the game that sounds like that, can you explain how to progress past that point because I want to go back and try to finish the game but I don't want to go back and be stuck there again for another hour. At some point in that section I got stuck and couldn't figure out how to proceed so I quit out of frustration. I think the ceiling was nowhere to be seen at that point as well and it just extends upwards into nothingness if I remember correctly. After getting out of that office the play area leads upwards and you can look down to see the office below you as you work your way up trying not to fall. I don't remember what triggers the opening of the next area but I believe one of the bookcases opens up allowing you to leave. Also, I think there was a telephone somewhere in the room and it rings. I think there may have been a sitting area in the room with a couch and some chairs but I'm not sure. I was in an office I think, with bookcases in it, and the room looks normal at first when you go in. Remember, this may not all be exact because I can't remember it very well, but I do remember some things. I can't remember everything about the area I was stuck in but I'll do my beat to describe it. I was enjoying it up until I got stuck and couldn't progress. I can't remember how long but it was a while. I played the first Layers of Fear a while ago. It only takes a few minutes and at the end, Typesy will suggest an appropriate goal. If you are a beginner, as I was, I recommend you take the offered typing test. Three options are available, for individuals, for schools, and for homeschool. Typesy (formerly known as Ultimate Typing) is a self-paced, touch-typing tutor program that is designed to take the student from absolute beginner through to accurate, ultra-fast speed typist, or anywhere in between. How Quickly Will You Learn with Typesy?.Let’s see if Typesy meets those requirements. That’s a vast improvement over the ‘two-finger’ version.īut, learning to type takes time so the dilemma facing anyone contemplating learning is “can I afford to commit my precious time upfront in order to save time later?” I would respectfully submit, the answer has to be “yes”, particularly if you can find a program that adopts the latest learning methods, is easy to use and is designed to get you through the basics quickly so that you can start applying what you have learned while continuing to learn more advanced techniques. Get up to 60 words per minute (very doable with a little practice) and that same post is now written in 16 minutes. Sure, you can get by using two fingers but you become so much more productive if you can type properly and at a decent speed.Įven at a modest speed, in the 30 – 40 words per minute range, you can produce a 1,000-word post in under 30 minutes. If you are working online, you have to be able to type, there is no getting away from it. I have not been disappointed and in this Typsey review, I will explain why this remains the premier typing learning tool. I had read such great things about the previous versions of Typesy that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the latest version for 2019. Add tags (separate with commas) edit tags. Absurd amounts of money can be found during "The secrets of Loc Muinne" sidequest (Act III)Īlso do NOT buy the Ban Ard Armor from the Mysterious Merchant in Act II (no matter how tempting it might be), since it can be found anyway after defeating a golem in a cave during "Where is Triss Merigold?" when you cross the fog (Iorveth) or in the same spot underneath the military camp whenever you like (Roche). get a "loan" (free money) from Igor Vivaldi outside the mines in Vergen (Act II) you can safely take more side missions if you are not playing on Insane mode Collect Kaedweni swords at the end of Act II (they sell for 30 Orens each) They sell for 9 Orens each and you should have no problem getting over 200 of those Kill Harpyies during Act II and collect their feathers. Go for fist fight/dice poker/arm wrestle quests with maximum stakes whenever possible (quicksave before to reload if you should lose) Sell every weapon/armor as soon as you find better gear Convince the Merchants in Act I to pay double for the Kayran (for a whopping 1000 Orens) Get the Melitele Amulet from the Mercenaries/Crinfried Reavers in the Prologue and sell it to Anezka in Lobinden in Act I (200 Orens) You will most likely not get this before Act III so hold on to your dear Orens whenever you can. Miser This requires you to have 10.000 Orens in your pockets at one point (not across the entire game). Should you have any less, check again if you missed something. After your first playthrough on Iorveth's side you should sit at 41 achievements (or 42 if you savescum Witch Hunter/Sensitive Guy) following this guide. Since this guide is made in the style of a roadmap, miscellaneous achievements that can be achieved anywhere throughout the game will mostly be treated at the point in the game where I think you should get them.Ī few Achievements like "Miser" are a tad easier if you import a Witcher 1 save but it's not that much of a difference.Īfter two playthroughs and about 45-60 hours you should be at 100% achievement completion. This is not exactly an elegant solution, but it gets the job done. To get some of the achievements that require the use of gold or character points more easily without permanently stunting your progress, I will suggest to do some save-scumming. This Guide will focus on playing the game first on Easy/Normal/Hard on Iorveth's path and then on Insane on Roche's Path. There is only one achievement that is actually hard: "Madman", which requires you to play through the game on "Insane" Mode which translates to Hard Mode with Permadeath. Unlike the first game, where you can just decide who you want to side with on several occasions throughout the game with little difference to the story you are experiencing, in this game you choose only once at the end of Act I and will either focus on the Story of Saskia and the Dragon (Iorveth) or the eponymous Assassins of Kings (Roche) in Act II. You need at least two playthroughs one on Iorveth's side and one on Roche's side. But there are a few things to be considered: First off: Getting all of the achievements in this game is neither especially hard, nor too time-consuming imho. In some cases, sight in one eye is blocked by sticking a patch or a filter to the inside of an eyeglass lens. This forces the brain to work with the eye it’s ignoring. Eye drops may be an option for children who don’t like wearing a patch. This allows the eye that’s being ignored to start working with the brain. Drops are put in the eye that’s being used, blurring vision in that eye to keep it from doing all the work. Medicated (atropine) eye drops can be used instead of a patch. In some cases, a person who is brain dead may be a candidate for organ donation. It is important for the medical staff members to fully explain that brain death is final, and that the person is dead and has no chance of ever regaining consciousness again. Brain death is often confused with a persistent vegetative state, but these conditions are not the same either. However, the person is alive and recovery is possible. The heart continues to beat while the ventilator delivers oxygen to the lungs (the heart can initiate its own beating without nerve impulses from the brain) but, despite the beating heart and warm skin, the person is dead. This situation can occur after, for example, a heart attack or stroke. Brain death occurs when a critically ill patient dies sometime after being placed on life support. Brain death is not the same as coma, because someone in a coma is unconscious but still alive. #Brick rigs android simulatorīrick Rigs is a simulator that will allow the player to realize all their dreams of building Lego cars, everything that can be imagined. For example, if I want to buy a gallon of milk, I would need to add a few ounces to my gallon before I can purchase the gallon. This is useful when you are trying to weigh out a large quantity of something. And we can also use scales to measure a quarter cup and conversion it back to ounces or grams. We can easily measure 1/2 cup, which is equivalent to 16 ounces. When you want 4 cups, do you use ½ cup or ¾ cup? Answer: You can divide the amount of liquid in half, which makes it easier to measure. All of these measures are based on volume, which is measured in millimeters.ġ6. There are many different ways to measure out a single serving of food, such as in grams, milliliters, liters or cups. A teaspoonful is equal in weight to 3/4 of a cup. It equals 1 ounce (15 grams) or 0.45 fluid ounce or 225.6 milliliters.Īn inch is about 2.54 cm, a teaspoon is roughly equivalent in volume to 0.5 ml, while a fluid ounces is around 0♵ml. There are 5 tablespoons (5 tablespoons) and a teaspoon (1/2 tablespoon) in 3/4 of cups (3/8 of cup). (12 tbsp x 0/06) This is a common formula used when calculating serving sizes. There are 12 tablespoons per cup, therefore, multiplying 12 by.062 to get 12 cups results in 12 servings. But with some trial and error, you will soon work out how to make your ideal cup of coffee in no time at all.How much is 12 tablespoons equivalent to in cups? Espresso is the fastest, while a drip coffee maker takes the longest. If you use a fine grind n a machine that can’t process it, you will end up with mud and grit in your cups and your coffee experience will be unpleasant.Īlso bear in mind that different types of coffee require different times for brewing, to get the best flavors. If it’s too hot you will end up with bitter flavors and your coffee will be ruined.Īlways make sure you use the right level of grind for your coffee machine. When brewing coffee, you want to aim for just off the boiling water, so you don’t burn your coffee. There are a few other important things to think about when it comes to brewing the perfect coffee.
